Stay Current with Computers and Technology

Gregg Allen

Osakis Superintendent

Do you feel like you are “out of the loop” with computers and technology? If so, learn about computers and technology by taking a course offered through Osakis Community Education. There will be three computer courses offered this spring. The courses are Internet and Email, PowerPoint and Digital Photos and Computers. Discriptions of each course and registration information can be found in the community education section on the school web site.

Have you seen all the young people with earphones on and wondered what they are listening to? I attended a seminar on the uses of ipods and podcasting and this new trend is just the start. According to the presenter, Mary Fitzwater from Apple, Inc., technology has been it very easy for anyone to make a digital file and share it. The files that people are listening to (or viewing) can be everything from, books on tape, music, lectures and lessons to identifying birdcalls and listening to your own heartbeats.

The number of podcasts is growing at exponential rates.  On September 28, 2004, a Google search produced only had 24 hits. By September 30, 2004, the number increased to 526 hits. On October 18, 2004, the number of hits grew to over 100,000 and one year later in October 2005, there were over 100,000,000 hits. This trend is not going to slow down.

Many college professors are recording their lectures as podcasts and immediately posting the podcast on their webpage for students to review repeatedly. Mr. Pat Ryan, Principal of Osakis Elementary School has experimented with podcasts and has periodically posted the podcasts on his web page. The technology committee at school will review this trend and prepare students for the future.
