Silverstreaks Are Prairie Conference Champs in 2008

Softball Team Wins Its Third Conference Title Since 2003

May 28, 2008

The Osakis Silverstreak Softball team finished the 2008 season with a 12-4 record and its third Prairie Conference Championship.  Previous conference titles came in 2003 and 2004.  This year’s team finished the conference season with a record of 11-1.  The Streaks were lead this season by the hitting of Kelsey Proell, Heather Cowdery, Ashley Long, Sabrina Zimmel, and Mercedes Klimek.  The pitching staff was anchored by Sabrina Zimmel, Kiera Zimmel, and Hailey Rajdl.  Also contributing to the title run this season was the steady play at 3B by Ashley Debilzen, the speed of Brianne Gielser, the defense of Brittany Wolterstorff and Kayla Maus on the right side of the infield,  and the versatility of Brittany Hendricks.  The Streaks also excelled at all facet of the game throughout the 12 game schedule, scoring 150 runs and 145 hits, batting .394 as a team.  The pitching staff gave up only 45 runs, only 33 of them being earned, while only giving up 52 hits.

Receiving All-Conference honors this season where Sabrina Zimmel, Ashley Long, Heather Cowdery, Mercedes Klimek, and Kelsey Proell.  Proell was also chosen as a Conference Co-MVP, by hitting .579 with 6 HR’s, 6 doubles, 1 triple, and 19 RBI.  Brittany Wolterstorff and Ashley Debilzen were recognized as All-Conference Honorable Mention.

Osakis loses three seniors this season who have provided good play and excellent leadership over the past four years.  Ashley Long (CF), Heather Cowdery (C), and Ashley Debilzen (3B) all are multiple letter winners and will sorely be missed in the coming seasons.

Osakis returns 9 letter winners next year and looks to defend its title and repeat its conference title next year.  The 9 letter winners provides a solid foundation for which to build again next season.

Osakis was coached this year by John Stigman, assisted by Kirsten Wessel and Lisa Olson.
