Welcome to FACS!

Reality Education

by Connie Ferris

August 30, 2008

Let me introduce myself to you. I graduated from U.W. Stout in Menomonie, WI.   After a few years as a 4-H Youth Agent in Wilkin County, I came to Osakis to teach Home Economics, now called FACS.   I am married to Bruce and have three children Brian, Keith, and Kristin, all graduates of Osakis Public School.

What is FACS?  Family and Consumer Sciences!  As our world and educational needs change, programs need to change to meet the current needs of our students; and thus came the new name. I like to think of FACS as reality education.  Nutrition, character education, asset development*, youth development, child development, career exploration and preparation, goal-setting and problem solving are topics at the heart of the current FACS curriculum in Osakis. Student also apply skills they develop in other classes and apply them in real world situation, such as the skill of technical reading as they read and apply directions for a clothing construction project or recipe; they apply math skills as they prepare budgets, alter recipes and interpret food labels. More about FACS later.

I advise FCCLA (Family, Careers, Community Leaders of America) and P4T (Project for Teens). I am also the chair of our school's Safe and Drug Free Committee and asset building efforts*.

If you have a question or concern, please feel free to contact me at school or e-mail me at cferris@osakis.k12.mn.us.  I am looking forward to another exciting school year.
