Silverstreak Summer Teams Have Excellent Summer of 2009
August 24, 2009
“Nothing breeds success like success” . This motto describes how the summer softball teams for Osakis transpired this summer. On the heels of an excellent high school season, all three Osakis softball teams had great seasons, with two of the teams winning their leagues, the other finishing second.
The Osakis 17 & Under team finished off an excellent summer season with a last at bat rally, coming from 4 runs down, to beat Long Prairie-Grey Eagle in the championship of the West Central Softball League. Down 8-4 going into the bottom of the 5th in the championship game, the Streaks scored 5 times, getting the last hit with two outs to win the championship. The winning hit was provided by Mercedes Klimek. An exciting finish to an exciting game. Osakis opened the tournament with a 19-4 win over Melrose. The Streaks finished the summer with a 14-2 record. The Osakis 12 & Under team capped an “Cinderella story” tournament run to win the West Central Softball League title. Going into the tournament, the young Streaks were the 3rd seed. On their way to the title, they upset a strong Little Falls team that beat them three times during the season. The Streaks won that game 5-0 behind the strong pitching of Mackenzie Gerdes and the strong defense behind her. In the championship game, Osakis knocked off a tough Browerville team by a score of 2-1, getting two runs in the bottom of the 4th inning. The pitchers and defense again carried the Streaks. Machenzie Staloch and Jenna Fearing combined in the circle for the Streaks. The Streaks finished the summer with a record of 8-5-1.
