OSAKIS PUBIC SCHOOLS

February 25, 2008

"EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION"

The mission of the Osakis Public Schools is to provide a comprehensive, innovative education that develops productive, responsible, respectful citizens who can function successfully in an ever-changing world.

OSAKIS PUBLIC SCHOOL

District 213 serves about 750 students living in and around Osakis, an agricultural and resort community in West Central Minnesota. It has provided students with an excellent education for more than 100 years, and will continue to do so into the 21st Century.

The district is extremely proud of the individuals and facilities that comprise our school system. Osakis Pubic School offers the best of both worlds: the comfort of a rural school and a varied and diverse curriculum which provides a unique learning experience.

OSAKIS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The elementary curriculum is geared towards promoting the growth of each child intellectually, socially, and emotionally.

The philosophy of the district has been to keep the class sizes in the primary at a student to teacher ration of 20:1.

The elementary curriculum includes, reading, math, social studies, handwriting, music, art, physical education, health and safety, and computer training. Students also receive instruction from specialists in the areas of art, music, physical education and media.

Osakis upper elementary students have the opportunity to be involved in many extra curricular or after school activities. Thes include band, choir, drama, Math Masters, gifted/talented program, volleyball, flag football, basketball, wrestling, foster grandparents, as well as targeted services. Osakis Elementary has all-day, everyday kindergaten at no cost to parents. Preschool is available at a minimal cost.

OSAKIS HIGH SCHOOL

The senior high, or preparatory years, build upon this foundation. Students pursue a solid background in English, social studies, math and science and can choose from electives such as college biology, college English, college algebra, computer science, and Spanish. Most of these electives are taught by Osakis school staff, while others are taught over interactive TV.

The high school also offers a variety of vocational and enrichment courses. Agriculture, auto mechanics, industrial and graphic arts, business education, art, music and more are offered, providing students hands-on opportunities to explore areas of interest.

Students are also encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities in junior and senior high. These activities include choir, band, drama, Knowledge Bowl, Science Olympiad, FFA, FCCLA, football, volleyball, boys and girls basketball, tennis, golf, softball, baseball, wrestling, and boys and girls track.

This well rounded curriculum provides Osakis students with a solid education that prepares them for the next step in their life, whether that be college, technical school, or full-time employment.

TECHNOLOGY

Osakis Public School has five networked and internet accessible computer labs. Every classroom has networked computers with internet access. Computer projectors are in or available to every classroom. Also, an interactive TV studio further strengthens our technology program and instruction.

SUPPORT SERVICES

To ensure that students reach their full potentials, the district offers comprehensive support services. Among these are Title I, special education, Reading Recovery, Assurance of Mastery, peer helpers, a middle level program, as well as targeted services. A social worker, school psychologist, Asset Builder, and school counselor work with students needing help, and a full-time health aide handles student's routine concerns.

Students in the district also may choose to eat breakfast and lunch at school. The lunch staff offer students a choice of either a hot entree or salad bar. A la carte items are also available to purchase.

COMMUNITY EDUCATION

While the district is committed to serving its K-12 students, it also is committed to serving the community.

The district also offers an Early Childhood/Family Education program called "Growing Together."  It offers parent-and-child and parent-only classes for families with children ages birth to five.

Adult Community Education classes are offered throughout the year. Adults also have the option of taking courses over ITV system that are sponsored by Alexandria Community Education.

THE FUTURE

The future of Osakis Public Schools is strong. Its dedicated staff, committed community, and state of the art facility ensure its future.
